Washing Your Cap: Care Instructions That Protect Its Shape

Why the washing machine is a bad idea

The agitation of a washing machine bends the brim, creases the crown, and can pucker embroidered designs. Dishwashers are worse: the heat warps the brim's inner structure and fades colours. A good cap deserves five minutes of hand care.

The gentle hand-wash method

Fill a basin with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent. Submerge the cap and let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Gently scrub sweat lines and the inner band with a soft toothbrush, then rinse under cool running water until the soap is gone.

• Cool water only — hot water fades dyes and weakens glue inside the brim
• Mild detergent, never bleach
• Soft toothbrush for the sweatband and stained spots
• Never wring or twist the cap

Drying: shape is everything

Press the cap between two towels to remove excess water, then reshape the crown and let it air-dry on an upturned bowl or a balled-up towel so it keeps its form. Keep it out of direct sun and never use a dryer — heat is the enemy of the brim.

How often should you wash it?

For a cap in regular rotation, a hand wash every few weeks and a quick spot-clean in between keeps it fresh. Sweat salts break down fabric over time, so rinsing the band after heavy summer wear extends the life of your favourite lid.
